Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is pushing a new artificial intelligence strategy focused on open models, collaboration and major infrastructure investments as the company works to compete with leading AI developers.

Meta shifts focus toward open AI models

Mark Zuckerberg has outlined a new approach for Meta Platforms that emphasizes open-weight artificial intelligence models and broader access to AI technology.

In a detailed essay, the Meta CEO said the company’s goal is to distribute the opportunities created by AI more widely among users and communities where the infrastructure powering these systems is built.

As part of the strategy, Meta plans to release more open-weight models and establish a $1 billion fund to support communities hosting the company’s data centers.

Zuckerberg promotes collaborative AI development

Zuckerberg argued that a more open approach to artificial intelligence could help prevent excessive concentration of power among large institutions and technology companies.

He said Meta’s vision is focused on giving individuals greater control over AI development, rather than limiting advanced systems to governments, corporations or private research organizations.

The Meta CEO also proposed that governments and companies work together to test the safety of new AI models and called for developers to have the ability to adapt and improve existing models.

Meta tries to catch up in AI race

Meta is currently attempting to close the gap with companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which have developed some of the most advanced AI models in the industry.

The company is preparing to launch new open-weight models, including Muse Glimmer, while also planning an open-weight version of its more advanced Muse Spark 1.2 model.

The move adds to the ongoing debate over whether powerful AI systems should be developed openly or remain controlled by companies that keep their technology private.

Major investments in AI infrastructure

Meta is planning significant investments in data centers and computing infrastructure to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence.

The company expects to invest up to $145 billion this year, mainly toward data center construction, and has outlined plans to invest as much as $600 billion by 2028.

Zuckerberg said improving infrastructure development in the United States is essential for competing with China in the race to build advanced AI systems.

Meta increases support for data center communities

Alongside its infrastructure expansion, Meta is increasing financial support for communities located near its data centers.

The company highlighted local economic benefits linked to data center development, including increased tax revenue that supported education initiatives in communities such as Richland Parish, Louisiana.

The move comes as opposition to large-scale data center construction grows in parts of the United States due to concerns around infrastructure, resources and local impact.

Investors seek stronger AI returns

Meta’s artificial intelligence investments have also faced pressure from investors seeking faster financial returns from the company’s growing infrastructure spending.

Zuckerberg has suggested that Meta could eventually develop a cloud computing business to directly monetize its data center investments, although limited details about the plan contributed to concerns among investors.
